As a sprinter Robbie McEwen was one of the best of his generation. He is the winner of the green jersey at the Tour de France in 2002, 2004 and 2006. He was a rider with determination, speed, agility and a good dose of showmanship. He’s been retired for a couple of seasons now but remains in touch with the sport he loves. Still riding regularly, McEwen has also done his fair share of commentary and when we recently caught up for a post-Tour analysis of the sprinters and how they fared in 2014, we covered a range of topics.

Considéré comme l’un des meilleurs sprinteurs de sa génération, les années 2000, Robbie McEwen s’apprête, à 39 ans, à faire ses adieux au peloton professionnel. Depuis près de deux décennies, le sprinteur australien enfile les succès comme des perles. Dans quelques jours, il sera un jeune retraité, mais aujourd’hui, il reste l’un des coureurs en activité ayant le plus de victoires professionnelles au compteur. C’est donc un grand Monsieur du cyclisme qui va bientôt nous quitter… Dans 15 jours, à l’issue du Tour de Californe, Robbie McEwen, tournera la page et tentera de débuter une nouvelle carrière. Sa reconversion est déjà écrite depuis de longs mois et il ne devrait pas se trouver trop dépaysé dans sa nouvelle activité, celle de « conseiller pour sprinteurs ». Véritable icône en Australie et considéré comme un « mentor » chez GreenEDGE, Robbie McEwen continuera de travailler avec la structure australienne et de transmettre sa science aux jeunes, à l’instar d’Erik Zabel chez HTC, ou de Mario Cipollini chez Katusha. A l’aube de placer le point final de sa carrière, l’homme aux 3 maillots vert est revenu pour Cyclism’Actu sur sa carrière, sa dernière année, son avenir et sur celui du sprint australien.
