Tom Zirbel has been a fixture in the US domestic cycling scene for nearly a decade, but the 37-year-old who won the US time trial championship in 2013 told Cyclingnews recently that 2016 will be his final season in the pro peloton.

At 36 years-of-age Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies’ Tom Zirbel isn’t getting any younger but it took Worlds TT medallist Taylor Phinney to wrest the 2013 stars and stripes TT jersey off the big man’s back. He was well in the picture in every TT he rode in 2014 as well as being runner-up in the NRC calendar.

Two months since his return to racing, on the eve before the big test, the US Pro Time Trial, Tom Zirbel was relaxed and ready. The last time he took part (2009), Zirbel finished second and followed that up with a fourth place at the World TT Championships.

After over a year and a half away from racing, US time trial specialist Tom Zirbel has secured a contract to race with the Jamis/Sutter Home team for the remainder of the season. The team will ride the Tour of California, and will try to secure a place for him in the race.

Things were looking pretty rosy for Tom Zirbel at the end of 2009. He'd won stages at Nature Valley, Fitchburg, the Cascade Classic, Elk Grove and he'd placed fourth in the Worlds TT in Mendrisio. The ink was dry on a nice crisp contract with Garmin...but then disaster struck.

Tom Zirbel decided to retire from professional cycling last week after receiving a two-year suspension from the United States Anti-Doping Agency. The time trial specialist tested positive for Dehydroepiandrosterone from a urine sample taken by USADA following the USPro Championships.

On December 27, Tom Zirbel announced that his A sample from the USA Professional Time Trial Championships tested positive for exogenous DHEA. The B sample results are still pending while Zirbel waits, riding the wave of support as he calls it.
