Katie Compton is the reigning national cyclocross champion, as well as the silver medalist at the 2007 UCI World Cyclocross Championships. When Katie won her first national championship in 2004, she surprised her competitors and the media, but she wasn’t a stranger to competing at the top level. The three-time national cyclocross champion had already won gold medals with Karissa Whitsell while piloting their tandem in the Paralympics, IBSA and IPC World Championships, and U.S. Paralympic National Championships.

The 38-year-old has won over 120 races in her 15-year career, including 22 World Cups. She's taken silver and bronze medals at the World Championships, consistently ranks among the world's top riders, and is again chasing gold as she begins what could be her penultimate season racing as a professional. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Compton lives in Colorado in the offseason, though she primarily races in Europe — mostly in Belgium, the hotbed of 'cross.

Even though she is a three-time U.S. national champion, it's worth remembering that the 2006-07 ‘cross season is Katie Compton's first full season in the sport. It's especially worth remembering because on Sunday Compton did what no other American woman ever has, she earned a medal at a UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships.
