Wood turns full attention to family

Oenone Wood took the peloton by storm with two consecutive World Cup titles in 2004 and 2005. Despite this, the popular Aussie has decided to call an early end to her professional career to return home and restart her career as an electrical engineer.

Early season racing in America

Switching from Nürnberger to T-Mobile does not mean a lot of changes in her racing schedule for this year, but one difference is some early season racing in America. The team will be racing Sequoia Classic and Redlands Tour in California.

Oenone greeted us with a big smile and a warm welcome. Quickly in out of the cold, we relax in the living room of her Aunt and Uncle’s house, listening to some hip music, talking about the Tour of Flanders, her Commonwealth Games medals and her upcoming races.

Although not exactly a household name, 25-year-old road cyclist Oenone Wood boasts some of the most impressive credentials in Australia’s cycling team. Despite taking up competitive riding just four years ago, Wood is the current World Cup and Australian time trial champion and just recently recorded her third straight overall victory in the Geelong Tour.

Finishing it off in style

The face said it all - showing everyone a big smile, and her new bronze medal, Australia’s Oenone Wood was on cloud nine, even though gold eluded her in the world championships women’s road race. Wood felt wonderful after finishing off some great teamwork for third, ending a very good season that included first overall in the women's World Cup and winning the overall Tour de Montreal. Cyclingnews' Hernan Alvarez Macias caught up with Wood minutes after the worlds race in the medical control, together with Nicole Cooke and Regina Schleicher.
