The Belgians have a knack for exalting their favorite sons. Before Tom Boonen there was Johan Museeuw, whose nickname, the “Lion of Flanders,” still follows him today. Now 51, Museeuw won Paris-Roubaix and the Tour of Flanders three times each, and snagged the 1996 world championships.

De West-Vlaming heeft een fenomenaal palmares bij elkaar gereden: drie keer Ronde van Vlaanderen, drie keer Parijs-Roubaix, twee keer Belgisch kampioen, wereldkampioen, twee keer Wereldbeker, en ga zo maar door. Maar zijn dopingbekentenis in 2007 werpt een donkere schaduw op die lijst. Voor dit gesprek gaat de Leeuw van Vlaanderen geen vraag uit de weg.

One of the biggest races in the world, born more than one century ago, the Tour of Flanders is on Sunday and everyone expects a great fight between Fabian Cancellara, the 2013 winner, his arch-rival Tom Boonen, Peter Sagan, and Sep Vanmarcke. The course is different than last year, with the Koppenberg now being closer to the finish and only two laps over the Oude Kwaremont – Paterberg circuit, but this doesn’t mean it will be easier.
