Once the London Olympics were over Rohan Dennis vowed that his track racing days are over. That’s true… to an extent. On 8 January he’ll return to the velodrome to take on the hour record. It’s a race against time. How far can he go in this prestigious competition that’s only result classification is an honour roll? The need to tweet some news a few days earlier than had been agreed cost Rohan Dennis some money but the news is now out: the 24-year-old has transferred from Garmin-Sharp to BMC Racing. The mid-season team swap sets a precedent but, according to the rider himself, the parties involved are happy with the arrangement.

According to the official release about the elite men’s time trial at the 2014 national championships: “South Australian Rohan Dennis (Garmin-Sharp) crashed out of the race after a strong wind gust knocked him to the ground. Dennis is expected to line up for Sunday men’s road race on January 12.”

A rookie season…

In a season that began with a last-minute withdrawal from his hometown WorldTour race – before it began – because of viral meningitis, Rohan Dennis would go on to surpass even his ambitious expectations. The 23-year-old went to the London Olympics as a track rider but he is now a full-time road cycling professional. It took a while for him to find the right place to show off his abilities – and stunning pedalling action – but he has settled in to the environment offered by the Garmin-Sharp team. He recovered from the illness while fretting that he might have been forced to waste opportunity presented to him by Jonathan Vaughters and the Slipstream team and eventually started to rack up a few good results.
