Approximately 40 kilometres from the end of Sunday’s Amstel Gold Race, things unravelled for Jay McCarthy and, by extension, for Peter Sagan’s chances in the race. McCarthy was with his teammate in the main group of favourites, but tangled with Rigoberto Uran (EF Education First-Drapac) on a corner and hit the ground.

For his day job, Rupert Guinness writes about sport. He started with rowing and he’s regularly covered rugby but it’s cycling that has been the biggest influence on his professional life. As a journalist for Fairfax Media, he has covered some of the world’s biggest bike races and this May he was back in Italy for the Giro d’Italia. While he filed daily reports for his newspaper, it wasn’t always possible to publish all the stories he collected during his visit.

Cyclingnews will be introducing some of the fresh faces in the WorldTour peloton for 2013 in a series of articles. Here, we caught up with 20-year-old Jay McCarthy at the Tour Down Under. The Australian picked up some impressive results in 2012, including six wins - including the prologue of the Tour de l'Avenir. He has also taken stage wins at the Tour de Bretagne - Trophee des Granitiers, Toscana - Coppa delle Nazioni and the New Zealand Cycle Classic, where he also won the overall title. He also won the one-day race Trofeo Piva Banca Popolare di Vicenza.

Queensland's Jay McCarthy has collected the silver medal in the men's road race at the UCI Junior Road World Championships in Offida, Italy. The reigning Australian U19 road race champion led home a chasing bunch for second place three seconds behind winner Olivier Le Gac.
