At 4.32am Monday 16 April, Mathew Hayman hung up the phone after speaking to his brother Marcus who still lives in Canberra. The champion of the 114th edition of Paris-Roubaix then called his father before finally switching off the phone and pretending that he could get to sleep.

He’s explained his loss of many minutes to the winner, Niki Terpstra, and how two punctures in three kilometres near the final sector of pavé ended any hope he may have had on a day when he was not only a leader but also finding his rhythm on the cobbled roads leading to Roubaix. On the eve of his son’s third birthday Mathew Hayman was working on a Sunday. He was riding his bike to Roubaix over nasty cobblestones. Next week he turns 36 and he’ll have forgotten about the pain that was conjured while doing his job. The “video” in his mind, however, will still playback the images of the contest he’s come to love.
