Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin Sharp) continues his build-up to a defence at the Giro d'Italia with the Ardennes Classics kicking off this weekend. The Canadian rider has always been a factor in Amstel, Flèche and Liège, with top-ten placings in each event over the last few years, and with Dan Martin in a rich vein of form too, Garmin look well equipped for the week ahead. For Hesjedal the focus is firmly on the Giro d'Italia, although he knows that his current form should mean he features in the upcoming races too.

After 21 stages covering 3,430.5 kilometres at the Tour de France, Ryder Hesjedal finally had an opportunity to take a short break. His fourth Tour de France had some ups (3rd place in Stage 16) and some downs (a crash in Stage 7.) But his team, Garmin-Cervélo, was successful, no matter how you measure that word: 4 stage wins (1 Team Time Trial, 1 for Tyler Farrar, 2 for Thor Hushovd,) 7 days in the yellow jersey (Hushovd,) 9th on GC (Tom Danielson) and last, but definitely not least, Team GC champions.

Canadian Ryder Hesjedal, of Victoria, B.C., came away with a nice consolation prize for his efforts in the Tour de Georgia - the final king of the mountains jersey. Hesjedal, 26, joined the Health Net squad this year after his former squad, Phonak, disbanded following the 2006 season.

Just over a week ago, Ryder Hesjedal recorded the best result ever for a Canadian in the Pro Tour, when he finished fourth overall in the week-long Volta a Catalunya in Spain. Hesjedal's result vaulted him into the top-40 in the Pro Tour standings.

Ryder Hesjedal continues to develop his skills in the professional road peloton in Europe, racing for the Phonak ProTour team. Last week he finished 17th overall in the Settimana Ciclistica Internazionale Coppi-Bartali in Italy, with a strong 6th place finish in the 2nd stage. Currently, he is racing in Belgium in the Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde.
