A pro for almost 20 years and a winner of Gent-Wevelgem (the only American to finish first in this Belgian Classic), George Hincapie retired at the end of the 2012 season, but this doesn’t mean he isn’t connected to the world of cycling anymore. On the contrary, he has his own team, Hincapie Sportswear Development, that’s prepared to start its second season with a roster of 14 riders.

Avec 9 éditions gagnées, en tant qu’équipier, et avec 17 participations au compteur, George Hincapie appartient à la légende du Tour de France. A 39 ans, « Big George » s’apprête à mettre un terme à une immense carrière. Celle d’un capitaine de route hors norme. Coureur de confiance et apprécié de tous ses directeurs sportifs, il a toujours su faire l’unanimité. « George est un incontournable. Il m’est indispensable, ce sont mes yeux et mes oreilles au sein du peloton », explique John Lelangue, son directeur sportif chez BMC. Même si les années défilent, Hincapie garde la foi et sa passion pour le cyclisme. « Chaque hiver, lorsque l’on donne les calendriers et les objectifs, il est motivé comme un junior », poursuit Lelangue, émerveillé. Mais avant de partir et de laisser un grand trou dans le peloton, ce capitaine de route exemplaire compte bien repartir avec une 10e victoire sur Tour. En effet, son leader Cadel Evans, tenant du titre, est l’un des deux grands favoris, avec Bradley Wiggins, dans la course au maillot jaune. Et l’Australien sait ô combien il peut compter sur son pote Américain ! Si tous les grands leaders se l’arrachent c’est bien que « Big George » est apprécié et essentiel pour construire ses victoires. American veteran to back Evans, Gilbert and Hushovd in 2012 George Hincapie When he clicks into his pedals and accelerates out of Gaiole in Chianti for the start of the Strade Bianche race on March 3rd, George Hincapie will be raising the curtain on his nineteenth season in the pro peloton. To put that into perspective, his new BMC Racing team-mate Tejay Van Garderen was all of five years of age when Hincapie inked his first pro contract with the Motorola team in 1994.
